The Institute consists of 15 laboratories. The employees of the Institute amount to 137 people, including 74 research workers, 10 of whom are Doctors of Sciences and 35 Candidates of Sciences. 12 research workers are under the age of 33.
The Institute was established in 1970. In 1980, on the base of subdivisions of the Institute, the Mining Institute of the North of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded, and in 1990 the Institute of Non-Metal Materials of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences also grew out of the Institute's subdivisions.
Directors of the Institute were: from 1970 to 1973 - Professor Nikolai S.lvanov; from 1973 to 1979 - Academician Nikolai V.Chersky; from 1979 to 1986 - Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yury S.Urzhumtsev. From 1986 till the present time the Director of the Institute is Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.P.Larionov.
Great contribution to organization and development of research was made by famous scientists who worked or are currently working in the Institute: Academician N.V.Chersky, Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.P.Larionov and Yu.S.Urzhumtsev, Doctors of Sciences A.P.Ammosov, E.A.Bondarev, N.P.Bolotina, V.P.Gulyaev, E.L.Gusev, N.S.lvanov, A.V.Lyglaev, L.M.Nikitina, M.D.Novopashin, N.A.Petrov, I.N.Chersky, Candidates of Sciences R.S.Grigoryev, Yu.I.Egorov, A.V.Kolmogorov, D.D.Nogovitsyn, P.P.Permyakov, F.S.Popov, O.I.SIeptsov, A.V.Stepanov, A.M.Timofeev, G.M.Chudinov, P.G.Yakovlev, and others.

The Institute's major lines of investigation are the following:

- physics and mechanics of strength and destruction of metals, including welds and constructions under low temperatures;

- thermophysics of heat and mass transfer applied to engineering structures of the Far North;

- physico-engineering problems of the Far North energetics.
