On the staff of the Institute there are 245 people, including 115 research workers, 6 of whom are Doctors of Sciences and 59 Candidates of sciences. The Institute comprises 7 scientific laboratories and a botanical garden with its branch in the village of Toybohoy in the Suntar district of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).
The Institute was established in 1952. It grew out of subdivisions of the Yakut Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences whose main scientific interest was biology. The first Director of the Institute in 1952-1954 was a prominent specialist in the field of plant physiology, Professor V.P.Dadykin. His place then took a famous geneticist, Doctor of Biology Y.L.GIembotsky (1954-1957). From 1957 to1960 the Institute was headed by a pedologist. Professor V.G.Zolnikov, from 1960 to 1968 - by a well-known specialist in forest science. Professor I.P.Shcherbakov, from 1986 up to now the Director is a famous scientist in the field of ecology and ecological physiology of animals. Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences N.G.Solomonov.
Great contribution to development and formation of the Institute's major lines of investigation was maid by Doctors of Biology: O.V.Egorov, K.A.Vorobyov, L.G.Elovskaya, A.K.Konorovsky, A.D.Egorov, I.P.Shcherbakov, V.A.Andreev, F.N.Kirillov and Candidates   of   Biology:   V.G.Alekseev, U.N.Ammosov, D.V.Grigoryeva, N.M.Gubanov, V.N.Dokhunaev, LE.Komarenko, M.V.Popov, V.A.Sheludyakova.

Major scientific interests:

-Soil, flora and fauna of Yakutia;
-Physiological-biochemical foundations of plant and animal adaptation to extreme climatic conditions of the north-east of Russia;
-Structure, functioning and optimization of northern ecosystems.
