In May, 1926 the society has organized the first exhibition of fine arts. In 1927 the question of a gallery was considered at the Government of the Yakut ASSR. Chairman of the CPC of YASSR M.K.Ammosov through the Commission of the Academy of sciences of the USSR on studying productive forces of YASSR negotiated for the organization of a gallery with the Museum of a department of the Committee of education of RSFSR, and also about gratuitous transfer of products of Russian and West-European classics for a basis of the future picture gallery.

For the first time the picture hall began working on November, 8, 1928. The exposition was represented with 106 pictures and sketches.

From their number it is necessary to note following works:

• " The Portrait of unknown in black suit " (1838), V.Tropinin,

• Etude to the picture " the Late autumn ", I.Levitan, with the autograph of his brother confirming an author's accessory,

• V.Polenov's etudes from the Palestinian series. " The Head of a young jew " is a spadework to the composition " Christ and sinful woman ",

• "Bouquet" (1908), K.Korovin, written widely and freely, reflecting an originality of Russian impressionism,

• Two attractive female images: " Portrait of Snegiryova " (1897), V.Makovsky and " Portrait of a lady in black " (1864) K.Makovsky.

Especially bright page in a history of a museum affair in republic was a transfer to the funds, with L.M.Gabyshev's assistance, a collection of his father - the known Yakut scientist, the doctor of economic sciences, professor Mikhail Fedorovich Gabyshev. The museum was named after him from 1970 till 1995. In 1962 M.F.Gabyshev's family has gratuitously transferred to Yakutia more than 250 works of West-European art of ХV1-Х1Х centuries.

The big help to the museum in gathering exhibits of old art rendered the known Moscow collector F.E.Vishnevsky who was giving during many years works of the West-European and Russian art. Among them a portrait of the second half of XVIII century " the Boy with a rattle " of an unknown Russian master, " the Portrait of the naval officer " of V.Tropinin's circle, " the Portrait of general M.N.Muraviev " ( about 1864) of N.Shilder.

The art assembly is a historically usual and scientifically - organized set of collections:

• Graphic and national arts and crafts of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) - unique and the most full by the structure;

• Russian art of ХVIII-early ХХ (V.A.Tropinin, I.K.Aivazovsky, I.I.Shishkin, I.I.Levitan, K.A.Korovin, etc.);

• Foreign art of ХVI-ХХ ( Rembrandt, Dyurer, Van Deyk, Renieri, Tsi-Bay-Shi, Khokusay, etc.);

• Fine arts of ХХ (V.Favorsky, P.Konchalovsky, A.Matveyev, B.Nemensky, G.Korzhev, T.Nazarenko, N.Nesterova, etc.);

In funds over 10 thousand exhibits are stored.

Since the first day of the basis the museum gave priority

value to formation of a collection of art of Yakutia, distinguished by completeness and chronological harmony. The structure of it incorporates all the best and valuable, that was created by masters of graphic, national arts and crafts of republic, for judgement phenomena of art life of Yakutia. This significant spiritual layer bears in itself art, philosophical, aesthetic outlook of people, that makes the main part of all museum assembly.

The collection is developed by a monographic principle. Here is reflected that generality of art problems and searches, arisen before the first generation of the artists aspiring to creation of the national art school. First of all it is necessary to allocate a heritage of initiators of Yakut fine arts: national artists of Yakutia I.Popov, whose creativity was the first experience of graphic culture and traditions of Russian art on the Yakut ground; M.Nosov with its interest to folklore plots and material culture of sakha people; P.Romanov - the artist of a bright civic stand, with his name professional development of the Yakut Union of artists and becoming of the museum are connected.

Among extensive lines of works of the named artists it is necessary to mention picturesque " Yakutsk in the end of XVII century " (1928), I.Popov, " the Hero with the bride " (1938) P.Romanov.

The bright panorama of fine arts of Yakutia in assembly of the museum is finished with a department of national arts and crafts. There are excellent samples of subjects of ХVII-ХIХ centuries, products of the modern masters continuing traditions of skill of weaving by horsehair, fur mosaic, embroidery, engraving and blacking on silver, woodcarvings and birch bark. The museum collection has all kinds of techniques of this ancient art.

The heritage of three known engravers, winners of the

I.E.Repin State premium of RSFSR is full submitted to it. - T.Ammosov, S.Pesterev, S.Petrov..

In 1995 on the basis of M.F.Gabyshev Yakut republican museum of fine arts the State art complex " the National art museum of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) " with functions of the research, organizational - methodical centre for all galleries and museums of an art structure on the territory of the republic was created with branches:

1. Vilyuchanskaya art gallery (Suntarsky region);
2. Namsky art museum (Namsky region);
3. Kharbalakhskaya picture gallery (Tattinsky region);
4. M.F.Gabyshev Gallery of foreign art, Yakutsk;

Also is open "Sakha-Art-Gallery" at the Permanent representation of SR (Ya) in Moscow with a view of expansion of connections and propagation of fine arts of Yakutia. In 1997 the National art museum became a member of the International council of museums. By results of activity it is encouraged with prizes " the Gold palm tree " and " Grand Pri " of the International program " Partnership for the sake of progress ", (France, 1996,1997).

In 1998 the Law on especially valuable objects of national property of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) was accepted.
